Social Media Algorithm,

UNCOVERING THE SYSTEM THAT KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT US.

seniorcapstoneproject

Overview of the Project

Life in the Algorithm takes a look into the system of the social media algorithm. The project’s goal is to observe and identify all the information that is taken to account and acknowledges how it is used to better enhance a user’s experience through the internet. It looks at how our choices and interactions throughout various social media platforms affect what we see on them. Is it because we choose to like things based on what we prefer? Is it because of how long we interact with certain content? Is it because the internet just happens to know what we, as users, want to see in our virtual lives?

The work behind the project was to create 3 different accounts with different aesthetics/personalities and observe who interacts with each content. Based on the user who has interacted, the answer to the question would result from who the person seems to be and if the content./account would be something that pertains to them. Other parts of this project consisted of side experiments regarding consistent interaction with content with particular themes, observing content that would be recommended and the duration with engaging a post.

About the Creator

Aloha! I’m Nadine Castillo, a student at the University of Hawai’i – West O’ahu majoring in Creative Media with a concentration in General Creative Media. I was born and raised here on Hawai’i on the island of O’ahu. I have always been interested in taking the media path back when I was at Waipahu Intermediate and Waipahu High School. As a moderate social media user, curiosity struck and I wanted to find out about the world of the algorithm and have always wondered how the internet knew what I was thinking about.
